As the trend of being green and more eco-friendly is increasing among businesses and retailers, Wal-Mart has announced a plan to start evaluating the hundreds of products the stores sell, and come up with an “eco-rating” system for them. This process is still in the beginning, and may take a few years before the rating system is actually implemented, since it will take time for Wal-Mart to survey all of the manufacturers and companies which supply their products about their business practices.
Seeing as how the Earth's environment is currently on a dangerous precipice about to go downhill, it is encouraging to see large businesses and corporations take up the social issue of protecting the environment. With corporate social responsibility being the new trend in business, Wal-Mart's latest effort is now targeting the environment, trying to present itself as a corporation that cares not only about profits, but about the environment as well. This can work as a new marketing tactic, making people feel good about buying products that are supposedly better for the environment, even if it may cost a little more than regular products at other stores. Whether or not corporate social responsibility is actually better for the environment and society at large is questionable, as businesses may claim their good deeds while actually doing very little to actually back those claims.
Being more environmentally friendly and doing more to protect the environment as been popular among many companies in the last couple of years. While any sort of action that promotes the issue is a step in the right direction, companies need to do more than just slap a “green” sticker onto their products. Along with making their products more environmentally friendly, both in the manufacturing process and the product itself, companies should donate more of their profits to efforts helping to clean up the earth, and developing cleaner technologies as well. Developing lower-impact products is not enough; companies need to think about the future, and how they can help out in ways beyond just their own companies. With all of the money they make, companies can surely make an even better impression on consumers by generously donating some of it to causes bettering the world, instead of keeping the profits to themselves. Being a socially responsible company isn't doing just enough to slap on a “responsible” label onto themselves; it's about doing all they can to help out.
