Govt. snubs University of Malawi students

BLANTYRE (Malawi Democrat)—Malawi government has once again ignored University of Malawi’s (Unima) students’ request that it should take back responsibility of providing accommodation and meals to them.

Students from Unima’s constituent colleges, Polytechnic and Chancellor College requested government to go back to its old ways where it used to provide meals and accommodation to the students.

The students made this request after their efforts to push for an increment on their monthly upkeep allowances failed to yield results.

And in June this year, Polytechnic students threatened to resume protests should government fail to raise their allowances to keep pace with what they call rising cost of living.

The threats were ironically issued despite the signing of the forms which the education authorities forced the students to sign as a condition of reopening Polytechnic and Chancellor College which were closed sometime back after the two sides failed to find an amicable solution to the grievances.

But according to Unima, all successful candidates who have been selected to further their studies will have to find and pay for their own accommodation and meals, come the 2013/2014 academic year to commerce on November 4.

“However, government sponsored candidates shall be paid a monthly allowance each semester of an academic year on pro rata basis to cater for their accommodation and meals.
