Tanzania: State Assures Citizens of Quality Education

THE government has assured the public that it remains committed to provide quality education to Tanzanians.

Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Jenista Mhagama, said this while touring the Dar es Salaam University College of Education and Open University of Tanzania (OUT) to inspect the progress of Science Technology and High Education Project (STHEP) over the weekend. "The public should acknowledge government''s efforts to improve the quality of education in the country.

STHEP is one among good examples of the projects implemented to provide access to quality education." The five-year project was setup in 2008, with the aim of increasing application of knowledge in economic activities and improving learning centres in science technology and teaching, in response to challenges facing higher education in the country.

The scheme is implemented in various higher education institutions in the country. Commenting on the implementation of the project, Ms Mhagama highly commended project supervisors at DUCE and Open University for ensuring well and quality work towards setting up the project.

While at DUCE, the Principal of the College, Prof David Mfinanga, told the Deputy Minister that through the project, the college has managed to set up various quality learning facilities including enough laboratories, setting up a centre for recruiting science teachers and lecture rooms among others.

"We have also managed to acquire access of quality and enough books, educating our students in first class universities in the world and above all improving and creating conducive learning environment," he noted.

On the other hand, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of OUT, Prof Gaundence Valsanga, said the university has also managed to build a 10-storey building set to improve the provision of education.

According to the National Project Coordinator from the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Dr Kenneth Hosea, the implementation of the project phase one is expected to be completed at the end of July, this year.

He said the project is expected to benefit more than 36,000 students and 1,640 lecturers in the country. The project is facilitated by a loan from the Adaptable Lending one (ALP-I) of the Word Bank through the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training.
